Advanced Topics in Nuclear Radiology (PART II):
Value of Positron Emission Tomography (PET) in the Brain

Q.     What are some of the indications for Brain PET?

Brain PET also utilizes the agent FDG used in whole body PET. The main indications are: malignancy, epilepsy, brain damage, Alzheimer's/dementia, radiation necrosis vs. brain tumor, depression, etc.

Q.     Explain the images at the top please.

First, this unusual color scale is chosen to accentuate the gray matter. Patient A demonstrates diffuse frontal hypometabolism due to a head injury. In comparison, Patient B demonstrates only mild right frontal hypometabolism, also due to head trauma. Patient C presents with dementia and demonstrates diffuse hypometabolism in the posterior occipito-parietal regions and mild hypometabolism in the temporal and frontal regions.

Please call me personally for any questions or concerns.
